can't stand the pressure

i've been thinking a lot lately about why i tend to feel like there is something always hanging over my head...like there is something always burning my thoughts, something that always needs to be done, something on my mind constantly that keeps me from truly relaxing and living a life of joy. and then it hit me. it's the list. the list of things that is recommended for me to do by certain professionals....or the things that are suggested for me to do by society. and then there are those things that are not necessarily required for me to do...but somehow i feel pressure that i should. and then there are the necessary things that just have to be done. anyway, here's THE LIST.
I SHOULD:
  • wash my face every night before bed...you know, to have better skin and all
  • use age-defying face cream every night to prevent wrinkles
  • wear sun screen (at least on my face) every day
  • brush my teeth at least twice daily
  • floss every day
  • use those teeth whitening strips for obvious reasons
  • keep my skin moisturized daily
  • get my hair cut every 6-10 weeks
  • have a full body check for moles, etc. at the dermatologist
  • go to the dentist twice a year
  • go to the gynecologist once a year
  • give blood
  • have the oil changed in the cars every 3000 miles
  • have tune-ups done on our cars
  • check the smoke alarm's batteries once a year (or more?)
  • have the AC/heat checked yearly
  • get a new roof
  • have outside of the house painted
  • vaccuum weekly
  • change the sheets weekly
  • dust weekly
  • clean bathroom weekly
  • clean kitchen daily
  • dust my blinds and other things i never dust
  • have my computer backed up daily
  • save all photos and important files on disks
  • put saved disks in safety deposit box
  • scrapbook important events
  • put my overwhelming amount of photos in photo albums
  • video tape throughout the whole house...include all valuable items for insurance purposes
  • put a copy of our will in safety deposit box
  • save for retirement
  • exercise for at least 30 minutes 3-4 times a week
  • lift weights for strength training
  • lose 10-15 lbs.
  • eat less carbs, less fat, less sugar
  • eat more fruits and vegetables
  • drink 8 glasses of water daily
  • pay my bills on time to prevent extra finance charges
  • live by our budget
  • take my kid's to the doctor annually
  • take my kid's to the dentist twice a year
  • save for our kid's college education
  • reduce their tv watching
  • potty train evan
  • help ella learn to read
  • help ella learn to write her lowercase letters
  • keep sunscreen on them when outdoors
  • buy new clothes and new shoes for the kids
  • get rid of old clothes
ok, that's enough. i know there are plenty more but my brain hurts. anyone have anything to add to the list? its overwhelming and to be honest, makes me rather grumpy. and how is it possible to make life more simple when we have so many of these things constantly weighing on us? i often find myself "shooing" the kids away because i need to get things done. i don't want my kids to look back on their childhood and think i didn't make time for them. and when all these pressures are there, it's hard to think of this time here on earth as temporary. it is so easy to lose sight of our real "home". but so many of the things on that list are quite necessary while here on earth....so where is the balance? i'm not even sure if i'm making sense. i want to live in light of knowing that this is not my home...knowing that there is a beautiful place waiting for me beyond this life here today.

i think i must be going through a season right now where everything is weighing heavy. the "list" is too much to bare sometimes and i don't see the end in sight...at least not today, tomorrow, or next year even.

what about, eat what you feel like eating, but stop when you're not hungry. take a vitamin?? that cuts out a few.
i don't dust, wash my face or use expensive lotions and we rent our home.

God did not create this list.
it is for freedom that he set you free.

oh, i don't see "vacation with dear friend in CA" on there. add it!

I feel ya. I agree with Katie. Stop listening to "everyone"/"everything" and ask God what does He want you to accomplish each new day. To me, that is the way I simplify it.

I agree with Katie....but you do need to go the gynocologist once a year...do it for your family. I have had an aunt and a dear friends mother die of ovarian cancer. And a really good friend of mine just recovered from ovarian cancer...plus you need a breast exam.....yearly. I know it sucks to go...but do it for the kids.
The rest of it.....you'll get around to it....enjoy your family first.

sweet friend, it is tiring when you look at it in a list-hang in there we have our moments of Starbucks, vacations and Girls nights out with lots of laughing and crying to help us remember anad cherish the important things in life!

have a drink, preferably with alcohol! Oh and think of naked men running around after soiling themselves-a suggestion from the good dr.

Sometimes it helps to just fill in the blank and say, "What's the worst thing that could happen if I don't ------- ?" Usually, the consequences wouldn't be that dire. You will still have your Savior. You will still have your family and friends and if they care that you don't have dustless blinds, that's their problem! ;) Really, I empathize with you. Thank you for articulating it so well.

Isn't it time for one of your famous vacations?

Keri- I am so with you in feeling this way. i was actually trying to figure out how I could make an annual calendar that reminded me all this stuff...oil changes, smoke detector checks, tire rotations, etc...
Just feeling your pain!

I can so relate to this too. It can be overwhelming, especially when you want to serve others and be the best mom you can be.
